Origin of Mwatipedza Village
There lived in the Makoni area, a man called Gandidzanwa. He had 31 sons, so his father chased him away because his family was now too big. People said to/of his family "Marangwa", which means "you have been disciplined". This eventually evolved to "Marange", the name we are known by today. Gandidzanwa moved to the current Marange area where he fought the inhabitants and took over the land. Gandidzanwa divided the land into districts, "Matunhu", and gave each son one to oversee and rule. Son number 27 was Mwatipedza, my great grandfather. As he was still too young to run the Dunhu, his older sister, tete Amaruza, ran the dunhu on a caretaker basis for him. She later handed over the dunhu to Mwatipedza's son, David Marange, my grandfather. When Ishe David Marange passed on, his eldest son, Philmon Marange (my father), was installed as the new village head. When baba Philmon Marange passed on, his younger brother, Noah Mwatipedza, became the new village head. Babamunini Noah passed on in late 2012 and I (David Marange) was installed as the new village head in October 2012. It is common practice amongst the Marange clan for members to opt to use Gandidzanwa's original son's name where their linage comes from as their surname, as did babamunini Noah, who used the surname Mwatipedza, instead of Marange.
In order to identify the line of relationship with the Marange clan, one thus needs to know from which of Gandidzanwa's 31 sons the other Marange's family comes from. One also needs to know the alternative names for "Marange", being the names of Gandidzanwa's sons. In birth order these are :
